Introduction
Cefpodoxime proxetil and potassium clavulanate tablets are a combination of two antibiotics that are used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Cefpodoxime proxetil is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that is effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Potassium clavulanate is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that protects cefpodoxime proxetil from being broken down by beta-lactamase enzymes produced by certain bacteria.
Mechanism of Action
Cefpodoxime proxetil inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Potassium clavulanate inhibits beta-lactamase enzymes, which are produced by some bacteria to break down cephalosporin antibiotics. By inhibiting beta-lactamase enzymes, potassium clavulanate extends the spectrum of activity of cefpodoxime proxetil against bacteria that produce these enzymes.
Spectrum of Activity
Cefpodoxime proxetil and potassium clavulanate tablets are effective against a wide range of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including:

Pregnancy and Lactation
Cefpodoxime proxetil and potassium clavulanate tablets are classified as pregnancy category B. This means that there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in pregnant women. Cefpodoxime proxetil and potassium clavulanate tablets should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefits outweigh the potential risks to the fetus.
